MICHEL FORGERON COGNAC
Founding and History
Michel Forgeron Cognac was founded in 1960 by Michel Forgeron, a passionate winemaker and distiller from the Grande Champagne region. The Forgeron family’s roots in viticulture and distillation run deep, with generations involved in producing high-quality Cognac. Based in Segonzac, in the heart of Grande Champagne, the house focuses on crafting artisanal Cognacs that express the terroir of this premier cru region.
Unlike many larger Cognac houses, Michel Forgeron remains family-owned and operated. Michel Forgeron and now his son, Christophe Forgeron, oversee all aspects of production, from grape growing to distillation, aging, and bottling, ensuring a hands-on approach and a dedication to quality. The house is committed to producing Cognacs with minimal additives, offering pure, unadulterated expressions of the Grande Champagne terroir.
Style and Offerings
Michel Forgeron is known for its robust, full-bodied style of Cognac, with a focus on long aging and the use of eaux-de-vie exclusively from the Grande Champagne cru. The house emphasizes traditional production methods, distilling wines on the lees for added richness and complexity. Aging takes place in French oak barrels, where the eaux-de-vie develop deep, complex flavors over time.
The Cognacs from Michel Forgeron are characterized by their depth, structure, and concentration of flavor, often highlighting notes of dried fruits, spice, and oak, with the rancio character typical of well-aged Grande Champagne Cognac. The house offers a range of expressions, from younger, vibrant Cognacs to older, richly developed releases.
